Fitness Magazines Pushing Diet Pills Print E-mail
I read most of the fitness magazines and health magazines and recently was amazed at the vast number of diet pills being pushed on readers. In one well known magazine, TWENTY pages of full color ads with rock hard bodies, are "selling" chemicals to desperate women by promising to carve the same look with little or no effort.

I really am appalled that a fitness magazine would promote pills ( by selling vast amounts of advertising to drug companies) as a viable and preferred option for women wanting to lose weight.
ALL drugs have side effects and even drugs once thought to be safe, can cause all kinds of hormonal and chemical imbalances in women. I say it again and again..even though some women may need diet help in the form of pills with a doctors supervision, most women DO NOT and most women can effectively make changes through a healthy balance of exercise, proper eating, and rest. There is no magic formula and no simple trick that will work for weight loss. I hope that women reading these magazines will not be seduced into thinking that diet aids are a shortcut and a quick fix for weight loss.
Weight Loss, exercise, better health and a better appearance are the common goals I hear when interviewing a potential client about what they hope to achieve. Some individuals have taken diet pills and others have already had plastic surgery or have tried to workout on their own and have not had satisfactory results. Experience, based on training hundreds of clients, NOT DRUGS,  is how I manage be successful with my clients and get a person where they need to be in terms of weight and inches. It is also what I recommend that they do for themselves, after they are finished with personal training workouts. I am grateful to say that often other areas  in their lives are benefited for the client as well such as posture, sleeping, relationships and reduced work stress, and these clients have avoided injuries, are tone, tight, free of depression, motivated and educated on how to continue to be successful with NO drug SIDE EFFECTS. Being a Top Houston In Home personal trainer requires that I have ongoing training and certifications and I am very "information hungry" so as to have the most options available for individual clients based on the latest medical findings.

Think Like the Thin Sculped Person You Want to Be Print E-mail
mel_fifteenWhen friends want to hang out, what is the first thing that everyone wants to do? Are Fitness and Health, Exercise and Proper eating, Personal Training in Houston as well as involvement in sports such as running, skating, swimming, soccer, volleyball, softball, tennis and more... are all these things part of the BIG picture of a THIN MINDED you! Are these the things they want to do?
If the first things friends suggest are activities such as eating greasy, "all you can eat" foods while watching t.v. and "chilling", you need to be prepared with your jam box or walking shoes so you can suggest alternatives such as dancing to cool tunes or brisk walking around the neighborhood.
If every time a person visits, and food becomes the center of attention, plan to fill up on a salad before and make a pot of splenda sweetened tea to drink so you can avoid" wine cooler calories" and the food fat calories.(I do not even like alcohol so this one is easy for me and most personal trainers).
If none of this makes sense because it is not how you were brought up, try listening to Tony Robbins "Personal Power" tapes and start taking control of your life.No one has to be stuck in a perpetual downward spiral of bad health and poor life choices. As a Houston In Home personal trainer, I benefited a great deal from the personal power  programs and recommend them highly for weight loss and exercise goals. These programs can be obtained at the library but there may be a waiting list to get them.

Protein in eggs can keep butt sexy and lean Print E-mail
Eating a protein rich breakfast can keep blood sugar levels stable and can help stave off hunger as well as help build muscle. Hildebrand, in the book 500 3-ingredient recipes, offers this 322 calorie microwavable egg meal that will satisfy even the hungriest Houston In Home Personal Trainer or any workout clients as well. Crack Four eggs into custard cups and top each egg with one tsp. grated Gruyere and microwave together for two minutes on high. Microwave chunky marinara for thirty seconds and spoon two tsp. on each egg. Garnish with parsley and serve with whole grain toast. THis meal has approximately 25 grams of protein. To lower the cholesteral, use only one egg yolk and three egg whites..the whites is where the majority of the protein is found in the egg. To make workouts effective, like those done with the best In home personal trainers, warm up first for about ten minutes by waking or doing some mild exercising, and then push hard during the hour long workout. The muscles, the quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves, are large muscles and are fairly strong so don't be timid. Do this best personal trainer leg workout one day and rest for at least two days so your legs can recover. You can work other body parts or do cardio like spinning or kick boxing however during the resting phase.

#1) PLIE SQUATS ..With legs in a wide stance like a plie, do a squat down to a ninety degree angle of the knees, sitting back like you would do to sit down on a chair. Each squat is all the way down to quads parallel with the floor, and then stand back up without coming completely to the top..in other words do not straighten legs completely or lock the knees. Do one hundred pulsing plie squats in this fashion without stopping (beginners do thirty squats). To protect your back, be sure to keep abs in and head looking forward and shoulders straight, not leaning forward. Rest for a minute or two.

#2) LEG CURLS..With 10 pound leg ankle weights on each leg (beginners use five or three pounds), stand erect and point right toe behind yourself and then curl up the right leg till foot almost kicks your buttocks. Do thirty of these exercises on the right leg and repeat on the left leg. Beginners do ten on each leg. Be sure to keep the exercising leg BEHIND you during the exercise. Rest for a minute.

#3) DEAD LIFTS .. The posture is very important in this exercise so stand like a gymnist with chest out and butt out and abs tight. Hold twenty pounds in each hand (dumbbells or other weights, beginners use five pounds in each hand) and keeping abs tight and legs slightly flexed, bend forward as if to touch your toes and then stand back up..leaving hands down by the sides without pulling up on the weights. Do not allow back to be convex, it should maintain a concave shape...like it could hold a bowl in the small of your back.The head should stay looking up and protect the back by keeping chest out and butt sticking out. To protect shoulders, keep them tucked close to your body. Do twenty of these exercises. Rest for a minute.

4) Jumping squats with med ball..(beginners do not use a med ball) Hold a ten pound med ball or plyo ball and squat down like a frog..then explode up in the air with a jump and throw med ball up at the same time. Land and catch the ball and go immediately back into the second squat jump, while throwing and catching the ball..DON'T DROP THE BALL ON YOUR FACE =) Do twenty or thirty of these exercises. Rest three minutes.

Once you have done all four of these exercises for your best leg workout EVER, get some WATER and repeat each leg exercise again. You will do a total of three to five sets per exercise. Yes it is hard but it is something you can do at home and even watch T.V. while you workout.

In six weeks you will see significant leg tightening and toning with measurable results, particularly if you are eating healthy food choices and doing two hours of cardio a week also which breaks down to thirty minutes four days a week.

How to keep an accurate food journal and help speed weight loss Print E-mail
I have all my Houston Personal Training clients keep a journal of the healthy food that they eat every day so that I can correct eating choices and learn how to better assist their workout schedules.By eating lots of veggies and eating the biggest meal at lunch, it is possible to look sexier and have a flat stomach eventually. Often, these journals are inadequate and do not provide the information I need to best help them so this article is to help show what is necessary for healthy eating at home or at work. As a Houston In Home Personal trainer, the following tips will help make the eating journal the greatest asset to you and make personal training even more effective. melissas_legs_are_long_and_lean
Houston Personal training tip #1)
Put the time of the day for every item you eat, starting when you wake. You should have a food item written in your personal training journal every two to three hours throughout the day to maintain your metabolic rate (the rate your body burns the food back off).

Write down sixteen ounces of water before and after every meal or snack that you eat and add a teaspoon of lemon or cider vinegar to the water if you want to enhance the fat burning properties. This, of course, means you have to DRINK the water, and it should end up being one ounce for every pound you weigh by the end of the day.
Houston Personal training tip #3)
Write down all the protein you eat and keep in mind your body can't absorb more than about 32 grams at a singlesitting. The protein needs to be spaced out throughout the day, particularly after you workout, and you should be taking in at least as many grams as half your body weight..if you weigh a hundred pounds..this would be fifty grams. Milk has protein in it too dont forget.

Write down at least five servings of raw vegetables and two servings of fresh fruit. The veggies can be lightly steamed and one serving is equal to a half cup of veggies or fruit. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS EATING FOOD LOG..the vegetables CANNOT be skipped

Write down the calories in each item you eat and keep in mind that one pound is equal to 3500 calories..to lose a pound a week just in eating...you need to subtract at least five hundred calories a day from your daily intake.

Write down the quantities you eat on every single item, and this includes bites, licks and tastes. (weight watchers calls these BLT's) Make sure the food choices are balanced and provide a variety of vitamins and mineral and take a multiple vitamin with an extra magnesium if necessary. Write down two servings of fruit..
Eat as many apples, pickles, grapefruit, watermelon, and veggies as you like during the day..eat steel cut oatmeal with walnuts and soy milk for breakfast every other day and have the biggest meal at lunch and eat either soup or salad for dinner with lite dressing and lots of fresh veggies.
