What is the right amount of protein to eat for workouts? Print E-mail
As a Houston in-home personal trainer, I have found that a lot of people are confused about how much protein is needed in a day.
houston_in_home_personal_trainer

Too much protein in the diet puts a strain on the kidneys but not enough can short-change your muscle requirements if a person is very active or if they are a bodybuilder trying to add mass with weight training workouts. Using protein to help build or repair muscles in the body is a good thing because eventually the increased muscle mass speeds up your metabolism. The more muscle you have on your body, the more calories your body will burn to maintain itself.

In plain English, this means that you can eat more and still not gain weight if you have a large percentage of lean muscle in your body. An endurance athlete would need 1.2 to 1.4 grams per kilogram of body weight and a strength training athlete would need 1.6 to 1.7 grams per kilogram of body weight. (To determine your weight in kilograms, divide your body weight in pounds by 2.19) For example, A 125 pound woman would be 57 kilograms, and if she was an endurance athlete ( someone who works out reguarly) she would need approximately 80 grams of protein. (57 kilograms X 1.4 grams)  Photo of Sexy Houston Personal  Trainer Melissa in a miniskirt dress.

Soft Drinks with the high sugar can lead to diabetes Print E-mail
leftimageAccording to Reuters Health, people who drink even just one soft drink (or other sugary drink) per day have an 83 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, soft drink consumers are more likely to become obese. The problem with soda is that liquids are so readily consumed that its difficult to remember the calories involved. Soft drink consumption has risen in the last decade by about 61 percent which matches the increase in type 2 diabetes and obesity. TIP..if you crave the soda fizz.. try taking a half cup of cranberry juice or grape juice and mixing it with a half cup of club soda..the fizzy beverage will quench your thirst with fewer calories and less sugar..plus you get some vitamins in the drink...try it!!
Think of it like this...if the human body only has a limited amount of insulin to help it stabilize blood sugar..that insulin is depleted too rapidly by constantly subjecting the body to sugar.

Houston has good food choices at Rockfish for those wanting a healthy selection Print E-mail
Houston has many restaurants with all types of cuisines but it is also one of the unhealthiest cities in the United States, according to a recent poll of cities with the largest number of fast food chains and the worst restaurant establishment choices for eating out. In this "sea" of bad food choices, however, there still are places such as my favorite seafood place Rockfish, to find wonderful meals that are delicious and healthy says sexy personal trainer Melissa.
photo_on_galvestonRockfish is my Number one place to eat out because and as a personal trainer, I can get my protein requirements without a lot of extra fat, as well as delicious fresh veggies there all with reasonable prices and excellent service. Houston Personal trainer Melissa Loves a burger like anyone else but the cedar plank salmon with bbq sauce and grilled shrimp on top at Rockfish is hard to beat..it makes her drool!
Go to Rockfish at one of the several Houston locations and get the eight good sized shrimp, grilled, and instead of the traditional sides, they will let you substitute veggies. Melissa always get the spinach and the asparagus. The corn fritters are yummy and the shrimp martini is to die for and the manager of the one on FM 1960 is the friendliest guy in the world and everyone loves him because he remembers everyone's name! Lose weight by eating breakfast says Houston personal trainer Print E-mail
rfidge Calories eaten later in the day are less satisfying according to a new study conducted by John M. De Castro Ph.D. at the University of Texas at El Paso. Many people complain that they raid the refrigerator in the evening, and in the study, an analysis of seven day diet diaries of 900 men and women confirmed that the average time span between snacking diminishes as the day continues on. A good way to prevent late night snacking is to eat a solid breakfast, according to de Castro. He found that on the days people ate the most at breakfast, they ate 100 fewer calories total for the day compared to the days when they ate the least for breakfast. Rats and other animals eat the most just before a long period of inactivity, but since people don't go to bed right after dinner there is a greater chance for overeating. Houston in home personal trainer Melissa eats about five hundred calories between when she gets up and ten am. which is half of her daily intake. She eats hundred calorie snacks the rest of the day and if she is hungry before bed, she eats a package of instant apples and cinnamon oatmeal which has high fiber and only 130 calories. Drinking Water Can Help With Weight Loss Print E-mail
Drinking between 1/2 and 1 ounce of water daily for each pound you weigh can set the body's metabolic thermostat, according to Golglia, author of TURN UP THE HEAT: UNLOCK THE FATBURNING POWER OF YOUR METABOLISM. Without enough water the body drops its temperature and conserves heat by storing fat for insulation, which is a survival mode. Drinking enough water (for a man 180 pounds, that's a minimum of 90 ounces or about twelve, 8 ounce glasses of water a day) will increase your core body temperature so you actually will burn fat.
