Response to a tale of two kittens |
|
|
|
A tale of two kitties. I really enjoyed reading this story. I laughed when the author talked about not being dating material because he lives with his mom and I smiled when he talked about how he loved his kittens. I paid attention when he said that bringing back the sadness he felt when one kitten got run was not something he allowed himself to re-live. His parable/story stayed with me when I was asleep and I mulled over so much that it struck me again when I woke up, that there was a point I needed to make before I could fully accept the story. I appreciated the way the author was trying to help those who suffer from sadness over a loss by using a picture and a feeling to illustrate the valid point of not holding on to bad feelings. The kitty in the story who lived was able to keep on going and even gave back to the owner when she produced babies herself. She did not seem to be affected by the kitty who died, who was her soul-mate during their shared times.
But my point, after much reflection, is that kittens live instinctively, and “Curiosity supposedly kills the cat” but in this story, the curious cat is the one who lives? She, who lives the most instinctively, is protected, possibly by her learning adventures. The cat who kept hiding and cuddled is the one who was killed..ironically when he was trying to run away. So in a way the story seems paradoxical to me.
Cats are instinctive but people are humane, or human. People who love deeply and who lose something, suffer when they are aware of that loss every time that awareness comes into conciousness. People in a prison can tell themselves not to think about the fact that they have no freedoms, and their “denial” mental mindset can help them endure unfair imprisonment or even torture and abuse. Human beings are capable of doing this when it is a survival tactic. Some of the more sensitive ones who allow injustices to touch their souls, have a more difficult time compartmentalizing their humanity and their ability to be happy in the face of injustice or the pain of others. The kittens in the story were initially inseparable and it is possible that the kitten who was killed lived his existence to bring a different experience to the life of the other kitty who might have been even MORE adventurous without the calmer brother kitten's example.
If two brothers were in prison together and one survived to be released and the other never survived the imprisonment, the living brother would forever hold the other in his thought and this thought might be a driving force for the surviving brother and all who benefit from what he has learned. Kittens ( or people) who are capable of loving in spite of personal discomfort, who can make themselves vulnerable and endearing because they allow the world to see their weaknesses are the ones who can, not only make it better and more fluid in a difficult situation, they become inspired and self actualized. It is not easy as a human being to allow others to access all our weakness and faults and be open and humble to the criticism that inevitably results from a superficial society. It is a beautiful and very liberating thing to reach that point as a human being; kitties reach it when they are born because they are never really aware that they are being watched. Perhaps the kitten who was so cautious needed to learn that holding onto autonomous life at the expense of really living is just the same as dying..and the kitten who was adventurous and lived life with gusto and open eyes, learned that by letting go of the need to control the outcome or the behavior of others, it was liberated more than the kitten who wanted to be free and tried to escape notice.
Both kittens however provided love to the owner. Both kittens had value. Not re-living the death of one is a difficult for those who memorialize death..such as many religions in the passion of Christ before Easter. Many feel that re-living this torture, proves man is appreciative even today. I for one believe it shows even MORE appreciation, to learn from others suffering by expressing MORE love. As the author says in his story about legging go of sad thoughts, it is better to not re-live the torture but rather to appreciate the wonderful qualities TODAY being expressed in all men and in all creatures, with abandon...with open arms. |

Tips on hiking in Colorado and preventing altitude sickness from a Houston based Personal Trainer who also lives in Colorado near the Collegiate peaks. |
|
|
Hiking up to the continental divide near cottonwood pass in Colorado, Personal trainer from Houston learns to adjust to the higher altitude.
While doing workouts with personal training clients at the local high school bleachers, Houston in home personal trainer Melissa noticed many backpackers climbing the bleachers with full gear including hiking boots, back packs and water. This arduous workout in the Houston humidity is a great way to get in shape for a summer hiking trip but after doing a five and a half hour hike herself in Cottonwood pass Colorado, Melissa knows that even the most strenuous summer outdoor workout in sea level cities like Houston, cannot completely prepare a hiker for altitude. Melissa Skye's hike started innocently enough at the trail head and her plastic grocery bag with an apple and a bottle of water seemed adequate supplies for the trip. But things started off badly when the Houston Personal trainer had to take a visit to the latrine at the trailhead because she had been drinking a lot of water.
That latrine was the most horrible stench filled room EVER and Melissa immediately had to fight off waves of nausea as the smell permeated her clothes even after she hurried away. Now don't be thinking she has never camped, because even though she is a "girly girl", she has camped and used other latrines and NONE came close to smelling as disgusting as the one near cottonwood pass. Five minutes later, still feeling like she was going to puke, the Houston Personal trainer started the hike (climb would be a better word in her opinion) and only twenty yards later she had to rest. TWENTY YARDS is all she could go without feeling breathless.
It seemed that the path was straight up… EXACTLY like running up bleachers only a person never turns around to come back down from a mountain hike like you can do at the bleachers. Hikers just keep going up, up and up. Even though her legs were not tired, her heart was beating like she had just run wind sprints and it was very annoying because the breathlessness from sparse oxygen was slowing her down.During the hike the in home personal trainer had to concentrate on picking up her feet but even so, she kept tripping over rocks. The trail was peppered with all kinds of large and small rocks which were pretty but were creating bruises on her toes as she kept banging into them with her foot which was not protected by hiking boots.
The water and apple in the bag banged against her knees and the branches pulled her hair and clothes and as she slowly made her way up the trail. Melissa began to understand why other hikers took the nature trail more seriously and were loaded with backpacks, dogs carrying packs, maps, compass’s, hats, bug spray, sunscreen, walking sticks, hiking boots, thick socks, long shorts and more.(hmmmm) Melissa stopped frequently to take photos of all of this and drink some water, and began to wonder at the intelligence of participating in this hike in shorter shorts, running shoes, water, a camera, an apple and a cell phone that did not get any reception.
Each turn of the trail brought more elevation, sometimes accompanied by a lovely stream or a small churning waterfall with a small log bridge. When she finally reached the lake at the top of the trail, she was to tired to enjoy it as much as she thought she would because all she could think about was how she would have the energy to go all the way back down. She did make it back down, and was grateful she had brought the water and apple because she was on the trail for so long. She also was happy to see the rocks on her way back down, the same rocks she had found annoying on the way up were now providing necessary foot placement holds because the gravel filled slope could cause a person to fall on their butt very easily.
She was also grateful for the people on the trail whose friendly short conversations were interesting to the personal trainer. She met a man from Boston who was sitting at a switchback because he said the trail was too arduous for him, a couple who had been hiking for three days and had done a huge loop including some peaks, a neat lady who had a shepherd dog named Tucker who was smart enough to lie down when he was waiting for her to go further, and a family with a boy and a girl who wanted to know how much farther to the lake. The entire hike made Personal Trainer Melissa a lot more respectful of the work involved in attempting to do any high altitude hike. But even so, this workout without walls in Colorado ranked VERY high on list of favorite workouts by this personal trainer.
Now in hindsight, it is useful to take the following into account before doing a colorado hike in elevation. First of all, make sure you have acclimated to the elevation over a period of several days and during this time be sure to drink A LOT of water to help prevent altitude sickness. It is better to wait a few days before attempting any hike up elevation for the first few days in Colorado. Secondly keep drinking water, water and more water and take four times what you think you will need on a trip. Third, make sure you know the distance of the hike and the elevation involved so you can plan accordingly. Some hikes need to be started early in the morning because the hiker needs to be heading back down the mountain by early afternoon in case of afternoon sudden storms which are very common and hikers have been killed by lightning strikes during these storms. Finally, keep in mind that there are a lot of blank spots and no cell phone coverage so it is necessary to arrange another way to navigate and to communicate when doing a hike up elevation.

ANOTHER REASON WHY EATING BREAKFAST IS IMPORTANT FOR WEIGHT LOSS |
|
|
Take it from People in Spain, Small portions and lots of walking for weight loss!
Stephanie, College Volleyball Player and former Texas boot camp client of Houston Personal Trainer Melissa has traveled to Madrid, Spain for her spring Semester to enhance her language skills. Her Workout goals have never been to lose weight but rather to gain lean muscle. However her travels have resulted in some weight loss anyway due to lifestyle differences in Madrid, Spain. So, In an interview with Citiflex.com, Stephanie shared how people in Spain stay so slim and keep weight off. "People in Spain do not know the meaning of the word 'doggie bag' or 'take home' because the portions are much smaller here," said vollebyall player Stephanie. "You get what you NEED to eat in Spain, exactly what you need and NO more." "But in the United States, the portions are so much more than you really need so you end up taking the food home in a doggie bag." "Those words are not even part of the vocabulary here; they wouldn't know what you were talking about," she said. Houston Personal trainer workout client Stephanie also said that in Madrid the culture has breakfast at ten in the morning (which is granola and yougart), Lunch around four pm.(which is a small meal) and dinner at eleven pm.(which is usually chicken or fish and some salad with lots of tomatoes). She said she is hungry a lot by the evening, but has adapted to the eating pattern for the most part. Basically the culture starts their day a lot later and stays up a lot later. Olive oil is used a lot as well, which is one of the healthy oils (but not a flavor she likes). As far as workouts or exercise, here is what Stephanie said. "People here walk everywhere, to school, to work, to the metro, between the metro," and all that walking happens on a daily basis." said Stephanie."I bet I walk about two or more hours a day", she said. Houston Personal trainer Melissa emphasizes to her clients that increased activity on a daily basis is critical to maintaining long term health benefits from weight loss and other cultures do it as a lifestyle. The only negative expressed concerning health in Spain was that, according to Stephanie, "It seems like EVERYONE here smokes" and of course the risks of smoking are well documented. But the walking and the small portion sizes and frequent small meals during the day are wonderful examples of how to lose weight and keep a healthy lifestyle. WAY TO GO SPAIN!

Photo of Austin Personal Trainer Erik Racing in burnt orange at Texas Relays in April at the University of Texas Stadium Erik, UT runner and Austin Personal Trainer, raced and competed well in the relays and was pleased with his time. Houston Personal Trainer Melissa acknowledges that running has always been a core part of her training. "I do not run with the same speed or intensity as Austin Personal Trainer Erik does", she said, "but I always include some intervals and running each week because it seems to be the most effective way to workout in Houston and burn body fat, as long as a person does not have knee or feet problems." Erik has a body fat of around five percent which is an endurance athlete level of body fat. But he not only has low body fat, he also has high muscle mass which gives him a fast metabolism. This combination is good for maintaining good health and high energy WORKOUT FOR A SEXY TIGHT BOOTIE with Houston in home Personal Trainer Melissa

STOP DEPRESSION TODAY WITH OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to various types of mental illnesses in the past but now it is also linked to depression. Because these polyunsaturated fats concentrate in the brain they facilitate the activity of neurotransmitters and can help improve mood as a result says Sarah Conklin, Ph.D. Spinach, walnuts, flaxseed oil, fish (including tuna and salmon) can all increase the levels of omega-3 and when a person is feeling happier, GUESS WHAT!!! They are more likely to exercise as well!! Here is a photo of Houston Personal trainer Melissa in Galveston beach, doing flex ball pushups to warm up before a beach volleyball training session with a client.
