Coffee drinkers can develop iron anemia, says Salida Personal trainer Erik.

Coffee and tea have tannins which block the absorption of iron. Iron is necessary because it helps get oxygen to the brain and muscles and people who are iron deficient feel fatigue and tiredness. Women are particularly vulnerable to iron anemia so it is important for them to minimize the coffee intake especially during meals. If that cup of coffee is important, then drink it between meals so that it will not have the effect of blocking iron absorption. It is also helpful to drink soy milk with the coffee if adding a creamer because two servings of soy a day have been shown to help reduce abdominal fat.
