How many people do you know who hate working out or who find an excuse to not work out. It becomes helpful as a personal trainer to recognize the traits or characterstics in a person that will make them more successful at losing weight and one of the most important things is a positive attitude. I have one client, Samantha, who is on my testimonial page, who has lost a lot of weight. It was not easy for her as both she and her husband work long hours and they have a lot of family near (Samantha's parents have eighteen aunts and uncles in Houston), clamoring for their time and attention as well as a small child who has been having lots of allergy problems requiring trips to the doctor. But what made Sam unique in her weight loss journey was her positive attitude and self discipline. Sam is asian and her culture and upbringing taught her about respect, discipline and hard work and I was so impressed with her weight loss ethic because she just sucked it up and did whatever I asked her regarding eating or excercising or communication with me. Samantha hired me as her personal trainer because she knew I was packed with information on how to lose weight fast, safely, effectively and how to look great at the end of it all. I helped her with lifestyle changes to support her efforts and was able to check things off one by one as she accomplished each goal I set before her. I was the expert and she allowed me the honor of helping her change her life and it was fun and exciting for both of us even though it was hard work for both of us. What made it continuously fun was her attitude because she laughed at how she needed to always start on a certain side of her body when we did a workout routine, and we also laughed at my singing, and I fell over when I heard HER singing because she has an amazing voice. In general we just laughed a lot and I enjoyed getting to know her immensely as she is an amazing mom, an amazing friend to her co-workers and buddies and is a real go getter! We talked about serious things too and by getting to know each other, that bond of trust is built where, as a trainer and someone who cares about people in general, I can see where things need to be adjusted and where an outside problem can influence what happens to a person. I had another client who also lost weight but this lady was not ever able to feel the exhilaration from the success of working out and following a plan. Though she hired me to help her based on my expertise, she refused to do the warmups in the morning because she always said she did not have a good night sleep the night before and this continued for the whole contracted time. She also did not want me to use the music I bring for the workouts and preferred to have the silence. This in and of itself is not bad however part of what I try to do as a trainer is ENERGIZE a person for the day with music and talking and movement and this lady resisted every effort I made to bring some positive thoughts into her experience. I scheduled a grocery shopping trip on my own time and to help her prepare healthy foods and she cancelled the appointment and told me she hated to cook and did not have time to cook. I asked her to write down all her foods so I could help her make better choices and she told me she did not have time to do that. Every thing I did to try to help her was met with resistance. In my experience, a person who really WANTS to lose weight can do it but it requires a change in venue. You cannot keep eating the same food, and continue to not workout on your own, and change your body. I beleive this lady had a negative attitude and even though she said she wanted to lose weight, she did not want to badly enough to make any helpful changes in her life. She lost twenty pounds but could have lost a lot more if she had been willing to FIND a way to make things happen instead of finding reasons why most things could NOT happen. Positive attitude is the number one thing for weight loss in my opinion. Just ask Samantha! |
